3C Software Participates in NRESC Chair Day
This year’s NRESC Environmental Design Engineering Chair
annual Chair Day event was held at École Polytechnique de
Montréal to promote their continued focus on process
integration for the pulp and paper industry. The event,
which was attended by many of Canada’s major pulp and paper
producers, was a forum for discussing how technology and
research in academia can improve performance in real-world
mill environments. 3C Software’s CEO Matthew Smith addressed
the audience on the added value of an integrated cost system
to ultimately improve profitability.
The focus of the enterprise cost system session focused on
the changing requirements for remaining cost-competitive in
an evolving market. Smith highlighted the traditional
approach to cost management and the four critical needs to
operate an effective cost management solution in today’s
business environment:
Holistic view of costs to include production, logistics,
distribution and customer costs.
Multiple sets of cost data to predict spending, indicate
performance, develop targets, estimates future costs and
establish a basis.
Fully-integrated systems to incorporate accounting and
production data to completely roll-up cost data
True and transfer cost data analysis to eliminate distorted
results and inaccurate P&L’s for products and/or locations
The Chair Day also included presentations by current
graduate students describing their projects which all
involve process integration concerns. Current student
projects are incorporating cost modeling to develop a more
complete understanding of the effects of integrated systems
in mill environments. “By working with the students at École
Polytechnique, we can then expose industry leaders to the
latest advancements in costing technology and processes for
paper companies,” stated Smith.
